Excellent audio recorder
Now I have two of them. I have been using the first one actively for filmmaking and am very happy with it. Excellent sound quality and the dual-level recording saved me a couple of times. Also, very compact and lightweight. Good build quality, not easy to scratch. The microphone is better than most competitors. The only drawback is the primitive screen menu which takes time to practice. Also, the power/record slider is difficult to operate for someone with big fingers, your nail slips off it easily. I wish it was higher.

Mic Great, Bundles Not So Much
This is the second mic we have purchased of the same type. The mic itself is fantastic; easy to use, great sound quality. However, Amazon's bundling really let this one down. There is a bundle option to purchase with a 64GB SD card, but it's not compatible with the mic. The mic only takes micro SD cards, and the bundled SD card isn't micro. Oops!

Excellent audio backup insurance for critical recordings
whwn recording audio using wireless mics this unit, connected in series with the mic to transmitter makes a very reliable duplicate track of the audio. If there are any RF dropouts resulting in audio loss from the wireless receiver then this unit has the duplicate track that you can replace the segment, or the whole track. The little slide switches are a little fiddly to use but do prevent unwanted operation when worn on the talent. Powered by a single battery they provide hours of recording time. A great addition to my audio recording and Sennheiser wireless mic system. Lots of configurable parameters if you need to trim them for specific applications.

First class recordings.
I use this recorder for when I am shooting video using action cameras or smart phone cameras. I am a professional and as smaller cameras come into play in the media world it is vital to have excellent quality sound from interviewees. So let me tell you how I use it. If I want my interviewee ‘walking and talking’ but am using a small stabilised camera with hand held gimbal, I record the interview on the Tascam using the excellent included clip on mic, and then simply synch the sound to the pics in the edit. This is the mode I use. The Tascam can deliver a variety of formats, I always use the best, so it is .wav files every time. In addition, I set it to auto level. Though I would vary this is there was too much background noise. I also set the limiter, just in case the person suddenly shouts. And, this mode is excellent: you can have it record two files simultaneously. One which is a bit lower level than the other, then just take your pic. Just plug the Tascam into your laptop, and it will show up like a memory card. Drag and drop the file to your desktop. Then import into editing software. Synch it up to your video (use the camera sound as a guide or get the interviewee to clap so you can synch sound and vision.) So, why have I not given five stars? I find switching the device to ‘record’ very fiddly. It’s a very small slider switch with a raised notch which you must use your fingernail to move. Once it is in record, it’s fine, because the front settings buttons are locked so that it cannot accidentally be altered while it is in your interviewees pocket. But getting it into - and out of - recording mode, as I say, I find a bit fiddly. But on the positive side, this is a very professional bit of kit. The sound quality really is top notch. And one AAA battery seem to last forever. I am glad I bought it as it has opened up a new method of working and allows fantastic sound when shooting on smart phones or action/360 cams which do not usually give pro sound.

A back up to my first
The Tascam Dr10L has been in my gear back for a couple of years now. I saw an offer on Amazon and invested in another. I think its a great bit of kit with dual recording and a locked in cable for the microphone along with a tamper proof recording switch meaning there can be no 'accidental' turning off if a nervous groom is fiddling with it. Well worth the money

Be wary of "deals"
First of all, the recorder itself is outstanding. I've used this on a tonne of video projects and it's never let me down. Audio is fantastic. However i just noticed a "discount" on this product. Says "RRP £243". Absolute BULLS*£% I've NEVER seen this for over £170. So although this is an incredible product, don't feel the need to stock up whilst you can. I own 2 that were purchased months apart and they both cost ~£170 non discounted. VERY scummy. Not even sure that's legal.

This is a great purchase.
Discounted and it still works very well! The audio quality grand. And it's light, slim enough I can conseal it beneath clothes- the added hook for the mic itself is sturdy and holds well.

A bit unreliable and fiddly
I found mine a bit unreliable - I think perhaps a slightly dodgy microphone socket? Sometimes I would turn it on and it didn't actually record anything, but wiggling the cable about might make it work. Also I find the lack of 32 bit float makes for extra work during editing - that dual recording hack does address audio clipping when recording in noisy environments, but it's more effort for you. I eventually upgraded to the Pro version which I find much more reliable and much easier to use, thanks to 32 bit float. I really don't think it's worth buying this now rather than the Pro version.
