Great stepping stone to healing
Great book. Has helped me a lot. I'm going through PTSD right now and definitely need therapy or some pills, but refuse to go that route ever again. Been having a hard time getting better, but I bought a ton of books like this one, and I'm determined to get better, and am finding that this book is a great stepping stone for me, especially when there are other avenues I should be taking right now.Never give up, and have hope and reread these books over and over, and you will find some light at the end of the tunnel, if you focus hard. It's teaching me how to focus on why I'm angry, and is that anger warranted, or am I over analyzing things. Does the same for stress, anxiety and panic, but you've got to put in the work. I read several different books a day, this being one of them, and I've been down this road several times in my past, and I'm determined to turn myself around again, so it's fair to say with all of that, this book does help me get through my bull$hit. Would definitely buy more stuff from this author.

Comprehensive CBT interventions simplified for layperson's use...
Gillihan condenses CBT into applicable interventions that guide individuals to change negative thoughts, core beliefs, and maladaptive behaviors. As an mental health professional (MHP) with a Master's degree in psychotherapy (specifically, CBT), I endorse this book for individuals who are looking for practical tools and interventions to help with specific issues/problems. One premise of CBT is that we teach clients that the one hour of therapy session that focuses on the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client is not the primary agent of change. (This concept countermands other theoretical orientations and constructs in psychology in which the therapeutic relationship is the primary agent of change.) Rather, the therapy occurs when applying CBT interventions the other six days and 23 hours per week outside the therapy sessions and outside the therapist/client relationship. That does not mean that therapy sessions should not take place; however, the purpose of therapy is to equip clients with applicable tools and interventions that they can put into practice. Gillihan's book provides a comprehensive set of applicable CBT interventions that have been simplified for the layperson's use.(I do not know Seth J. Gillihan, Ph.D., and I purchased his book because of my CBT background.)-- Kat Foley, MA, MHP

Pleasantly surprised! You can benefit from self-taught CBT!
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Firstly, it’s well written and an interesting read in conversational tone. It never becomes tedious and you can even flip around if you want a change of topic. The paper weight is glorious. It is nice and sturdy and just feels good like the publishers actually cared to produce a quality book.As for being effective, I am more than satisfied. I had little knowledge of CBT prior to reading this. It explained the basics and background thoroughly. It also provides a ton of exercises for further study. After reading this I found a great app that allows me to practice checking in on my thoughts and identify my moods at onset (as the book well explains). I now analyze my thoughts and thinking traps; I know which I fall prey to most often, and I can head off bad moods quickly just by identifying them and saying a counter rebuff to my disordered thinking.I was really low when I ordered this book but I actual feel like I’m working through my issues. I know it’ll take a lot of time and practice, but I now have the tools I need and a plan in place. I completely recommend this book for anyone struggling with anything mood-related at all. PMS / depression / anger issues / overeating. The science is solid. It works great.Giant thank you to the author.

Love this book!!
Being in my own private practice, I've tried many different CBT methods and this is by far my favorite book to buy for my clients. Very straight forward, challenging, and an overall easy read. Also very relatable for the average person who doesn't have extensive knowledge or understanding in psychology or mental health diagnosis.

The future is hopeful again!
This book is comforting as I don’t feel alone in my struggles anymore. The language is clear and concise in explaining how to identify areas I need help in and then, the actions required to make the necessary changes. It’s written with compassion & kindness. I’m hopeful again.Thank you Dr. Seth J. Gillihan.
