Faculty member on campus wanted new translation to compare for a new performance.

The Odyssey was delivered in a timely fashion and I am enjoying the read.

Even though the paper back is an old copy, it arrived in excellent condition with very little wear and no markings.

Accurate version.

For me, this is the only translation, apart from Aexander Pope's, that tries to make real poetry of Homer. Like Pope he uses all the resources of contemporary verse to match Homer where he can. He doesn't always suceed, but even his failures should be instructive to other translators. The visit to the world of the dead in Book 11 is a triumph: mysterious, sorrowful and succinct. His translations of Homer's "standard phrases" are another example of his craft. "Odysseus, master of landways and seaways", "the salt immortal sea", "the sun went down and all the ways grew dark" are some that stay with me.Fagles and Lombardo are excellent journeymen, but Fitzgereald is a master.If you haven't yet read the Odyssey I almost envy you. It's one the greatest things ever written and this translation is an open door to its treasures.

This is a very enjoyable translation, but there are two issues:1. The most serious one is that the verse numbering in this book has absolutely no correspondence to the verses of the original text! Therefore, if you are planning on using this book for academic reference BE WARNED!2. Again, if your interest is academic, the text may be enjoyable to read, but the structure and sequence of the sentences has been altered!So, it's great for a pass time read, but certainly not suitable for academic use.

Haven't read it for years, but this translation brings back memories of why I enjoyed it so much.

This translation of The Odessey by Robert Fitzgerald is the one used for the opening quotation in O Brother Where Art Thou. Bought this for my partner who is delighted with it. In his view, and many others, Fitzgerald’s translation, written in iambic pentameter, is the best.
