Utterly fantastic story telling and art
I liked everything about this. Most gay genre stories, art comics or text, are just okay and either go for erotica or shocks or both or romance without much excitement really but this has all of that and more. Colorful art, with pictures that almost move and give the brilliant feel of movement, interesting characters all around, action, and a true romance that builds as well as some interesting and tasteful sex scenes round out this top notch book. Please do more storytelling, in this and other universes! And I felt the same as you did growing up.

Not rounded-up story despite the great concept and plot details
I bought this book and I find the same problems as in "The Young Protectors" of this same author. The story concept is great, but the development needs more. When you start the story you have the feeling that there's something missing in the beginning, and the end is not only opened, but like if someone cut it off without mercy. Woolf is a great and smart author, and you can see all that sci-fi and comics background through the stories ("Artifice" and "The Young Protectors") but there's something missing, which is a shame, because when you're writing a graphic novel, I believe it should tell the whole story. This feels like a large third number of a comic series of 10 in total. The graphics are great, like what happened with "The Young Protectors", and I loved them so much.

Fantastic art and a good story
I am a big fan of Alex Woolfson's works. He does a good job making a narrative that is easy to believe and true to life, even when the circumstances are themselves larger than life. The characters are fantastic, very well rounded for the small amount of time we get with them. Overall the story itself is enjoyable, the drama of the situation and the feelings evoked during the "present" and "flashback" scenes are very well crafted. As good as Alex Woolfson's story is, it is Winona Nelson's art that truly captures me. She does an absolutely fantastic job with the scenes. The background and location art is well done, but it is with her portrayal of the various characters that leaves me smitten. She easily brings the story to life and captures emotions beautifully. While I love the story and the art I will say that the pacing to it is a bit... iffy, perhaps, once you get to the second half or perhaps the last quarter. Suddenly the story that has, until then, been so well paced starts charging toward the end. You end up being left with an ending that, while in no way bad or poorly done, feels as if it's come a bit too soon and in some ways, out of the blue.

Would love a sequel.
I had been meaning to read this graphic novel for a while, having heard good things about how it used a sci-fi / action story to talk about homophobia, racism, free will, first love, and self-acceptance; and in light of recent current events, it seemed like the perfect time. The artwork is absolutely wonderful, and perfectly captures all the nuances of the story, which is pretty great in itself. While it can occasionally feel a little predictable, the tale of Deacon and Jeff was sweetly romantic and contained many moments that I found very relatable, in spite of the science fiction setting and sporadic bursts of violence. In a way, this story is similar to recent British hit anthology show "Black Mirror", in that it uses its sci-fi setting to tell a deeply human story to great effect. While it may fall a little short of being a masterpiece, it is a great comic, and one I would love to see continued.

Exciting fight scenes, Satisfying M/M love story
Plenty of action punctuates a satisfying M/M love story between an android soldier and a human outcast up against "the corporation." Nice illustrations complement the thoughtful and exciting story told in flashback which keeps the reader guessing until the very end. I had originally read the story online on the author's website but felt compelled to purchase the print version as well (and was able to download the Kindle version for free thank you very much). The only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 is because the packaging and delivery of the product was poor resulting in the cover and corners were bent. Normally this wouldn't be a huge problem for disposable paperbacks but everyone knows that typically purchases keep graphic novels in pristine condition. Amazon should have taken better care in their packaging.

great story, awesome art!
Though I already read this at the artists own website I still wanted to hold it in my own hands (I bought a hard copy)! At first I was a little sceptical. Not because of the Male/Male Love (I already read a lot of Japanese Yaoi and Shounen-Ai) but because it's a Comic, not a Manga.Back when I was younger I read a few but with age I somehow found the stories to be boring, dreary, too Action-centered or whatnot...I'm actually quite happy to be proved wrong!Alex is an amazing author and I discovered the field anew thanks to him!Artifice itself is sadly a little short, but maybe if the pace were even slower it may have become boring, too!The Situation of having an inhuman Android develop feelings really got to me... and for all the characters besides himself this fact was just as unbelievable. at first. To not spoil the whole plot let me say at last: I even enjoyed the Villain psychologist lady :D

Great Story, Lovely Art--a Worthwhile Collector's Item.
I stumbled onto Artifice the webcomic and fell in love with the story, the characters (yes, even Maven) and the artwork. The romance between Deacon and Jeff is simultaneously sweet and erotic, but also deals with age-old questions about love--what it means to be in love, how do you know you're in love, how do you prove it? As with all the best sci-fi, Artifice is at heart a story about humanity, even if one of the main characters is not human. (I will leave it for others to decide for themselves whether the "inhuman" one is super-soldier android Deacon or flesh-and-blood Dr. Maven!) I ended up buying the book to have a lovely hard copy on hand to read at any time. It just arrived and I'm delighted with the quality of this book. It will be well-thumbed and well-loved for many years to come. I hope we'll see more great stories from Alex Woolfson...including an Artifice 2 maybe? Please?

An unusual story for a graphic novel
I first read this story online - and then supported the Kickstarter print version; I also have it on my kindle app. One of a handful of books I actually brought with me when I last moved. If that doesn't underline how important and good a book this is I can't help! The story is reasonably straightforward once one gets into it. The artwork is clear with enough detail to maintain interest without the visuals overloading the dialogue and text. It is tasteful - the sex is in no way salacious.Thoroughly recommended.
