Walter Benjamin, a German Jew, escaped Nazi Germany. Why then was he dead days later in a small town on the French-Spanish border? This documentary explores the unexplained demise of a Jew who should have escaped - and didn't. 'Perhaps the first ever film noir intellectual historical film, Mauas' documentary is at once beguiling and enlightening' - W.J.F.F catalogue, USA.

Excellent Documentary about an old Post-WWII mystery and a little known intellect.
Well done. Brought this writer and philosopher to my attention and sent me searching for information, background and Benjamin's writings. It is for the more intellectual viewer - it's not an action flick. This may explain the low ratings of some viewers who claim they were "bored" or that the movie was, without explanation, "unwatchable. I found it intriguing. The interviews with the villagers were living memory of history. Again, fascinating for those who like to think.

truthiness fills in the gap left by the disappearance of the truth
A brilliant and subtle exploration of how the truth was lost or buried in haste, so effectively, that nobody really knows what happened. It puts in question the conventional belief that it is an established fact that Walter Benjamin committed suicide. Did he? Really? How do you know?

This should be an interesting topic but I quit prior to finishing. There's too much rambling and gossip by old villagers and the main thesis - that there was a conspiracy rather than a conscious suicide - never seems to fully form.
