It is GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) listed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is included in the FDA Inactive Ingredients Guide.

I am not familiar with the 400 MG magnesium product. I purchased the 500 MG magnesium product. The ones I purchased are white, they are NOT softgels, they are a hard oblong shaped tablet.
