Can you use preoiled fire logs in this Solo Bonfire?

Hi, I believe that you should only use wood. It is designed for 12-18" lengths of wood. Using preoiled logs it might get too hot.

What type of wood is recommended ?

Dry hardwood is best. Seems to smoke more with wet wood. It’s still smokes less than a regular pit though.

You can smell the wood, depending on how far you are from the fire. At three feet from the fire, wood smell is apparent. At ten or fifteen feet, wood smell will be dependent on wind direction.
