Intense colour
Excellent value and good quality. The first time I’ve used oil sticks and a little goes a long way as the colour is very intense. Used in mixed media, mainly encaustic painting.

New medium and what a joy.
I have never used oil sticks before so this was always going to be an adventure. And what an adventure! I love how the oil paint goes on to the canvas, so bright, so pliable and creamy. I very much enjoyed the experience and I have no doubt I will be ordering more in the future. The future is bright, the future is Sennelier!

Excellent, bold colours.
I bought these just to try out oil sticks. These are really chunky and have beautiful bold colours. I'm still exploring what I can do with them.

Expensive but great
They're really expensive but they're great for working with! I usually just use them as large oil pastels for my more abstract works and they apply great though make sure to cover them after use since they will dry on their own.

I have been wanting to try oil bars for some time and settled on these ones because of the good reviews. They are made in France and that is usually also a good sign. They are quite different than using traditional oil paint & the bonus is that they can be layered with traditional oils. You can use them like a giant oil pastel for drawing effects, or blend them using a brush and some mineral spirits or turps. The most stand out feature is how highly pigmented they are. My only complaint would be the white stick in the set. It is titanium white, but is weak and doesn’t have the pigmentation or coverage typical of titanium or that the other bars have. The veridian green also doesn’t have great coverage, but that is forgivable, since that pigment in general tends to naturally run more on the transparent side-being a dark colour and all. Thankfully, the Cadmium red and cobalt/pthalo blue are powerhouses in pigmentation & coverage, and will do the job well. These oil sticks don’t flatten out and deaden. They have a nice matte quality with a slight lustre- not glossy. They run smooth and glide on the surface well. *con: this is not so much of a complaint as it’s just a heads up to anyone who hasn’t used oil stick before. After a few days, they form skins which need to be peeled off. This can be a messy endeavour and don’t even bother using gloves. It will make more of a mess. My little tip of advice would be to use a small diamond head palette knife and carefully remove the skin off that way. You will get a much cleaner result & a more concise lift of the paint film that forms on all of them when they’re not in use. A great product-will buy again.
