A Little Repetitive But Also Very Reassuring
First of all, I should say that this is not the most eloquent and best edited/put together book but rather it is a book written from the heart: Clearly it is written in Elisabeth's own words as she either said or wrote them down. As, presumably, English was not her first language (or perhaps it has been translated?) some of the grammar/tenses are a little 'off' and, unfortunately, it is rather repetitive - with some of the stories and analogies being mentioned numerous times - but none of this detracts from what this book is about … I did though like the fact that the book was short and down-to-earth with no hard concepts or difficult medical speak to understand … Being able to read something in such a short while is a bonus as far as I'm concerned - and certainly for me personally it got the message across quickly and succinctly. No one wants to be bogged down on such a subject ... It has been fairly apparent to me for many years that the real answer to everything in this world is LOVE, and Elisabeth makes that quite clear too. Those who have 'passed on', it seems, are in a perpetual state of such and it appears that those who've had near-death experiences are keen to explain the unconditional all-embracing love they found at the point of so-called death. I myself can totally relate to this having had a couple of near-death experiences and numerous spiritual ones myself. However, the book does somewhat lack substance and does not really explain everything (but then who or what can?!) It is now quite out-dated and a little old fashioned and of course more recent research into NDEs throws a little more light on much of the subject matter. But, bottom line, I do not believe that we are meant to know everything - that will indeed happen when we die! However, what this book does do, is reassure those of us who have always been afraid of death that we needn't be. I personally have never thought that religion comes into it since that is man-made and personal beliefs no doubt have very little to do with what really happens. After all, most of the fears of punishment etc. (i.e. heaven and hell) came about originally as a way of frightening and controlling the populous. But, equally, I am a believer in that there must be some kind of judgement and those that have caused terrible suffering or pain to others must surely be punished or judged. This book does not really seem to concentrate on this but, equally, it goes a long way to reassure that, if you've lived a good life and - most importantly - shown love and forgiveness, then you've nothing to worry about. I was brought up a Christian and basically consider myself one yet, in truth, I am not keen on organised religion. I do however believe in God (whatever he, she or it may be) and there being far more to life/death than what we see, with the ultimate and most powerful thing of all at the centre of it being love - our purpose I personally believe is simply to love and be loved. I have to just say here that I am not totally convinced that the babies and children who die young have fulfilled this criteria already, as Elisabeth suggests, but that is possibly an even deeper subject, in the same way that one's 'life purpose' is - I don't think that bit is quite as simple as is made out in the book. Clearly Elisabeth Kubler-Ross was a wonderful woman with a compassionate heart and a soul full of love - something all of us should strive to achieve I do believe but which most are simply not able to do. I am grateful to her for passing her thoughts/experience on through this book (and others that I've yet to read but hope to do so.) And, more important than anything else, she tries to explain that death is a new beginning - or rather a return - to wholeness and unconditional love: it is not the frightening or non-existent end many of us fear.

A hopeful and comforting book
I would recommend this book to everyone who can read but especially to anyone who is in the process of grieving a loved one. Everyone is different in the way they grieve but this book has personally helped me enormously. One very important message that shines through is that it is impossible to fully live in the present unless one looks at and forward to what is beyond our dying ....dying which is the only certainty we have in life. Also , for me this book is a beginning for further reading by other authors into near death experience and spiritual experience... It is easy to read ....deceptively so..I find I constantly go back to it and discover further depth as some sentences really sink in to my mind. .

great reading from start to end
This book is reassuring reading for those that are frightened of Death or just Interested in the subject, the book grips you from the start and is hard to put down. Dr Elisabeth Ross has years of working with dying people and people who had NDE's giving solid evidence of life beyond Death.

Not what I exoected.
I feel that some of the content is a little far fetched. I was hoping for something to help me through a difficult patch, but all it did was to open up a can of worms. I feel there could be better information available.

An amazing short book that covers the whole spectrum of death and life afterwards. Beautifully written with sensitivity and knowledge. Highly recommended, whatever religious or non-religious background you may have.

It confirmed what I have known in my heart since I was a child. I feel more connected to everything around me now and try to be more aware of the human condition. I feel a deeper LOVE for all of Gods creatures, the sky, the plants... everything. I drove by the same homeless man on the same corner where he has stood for several years. He is about 70 years old, carries a sign of "Hard Times" I had never seen him walk before, or at least I always avoided eye contact. This time I watched him for a moment as I was stuck at the red light. He walked with an obvious limp. I felt this overwhelming LOVE for him. I mean it literally flooded my whole body. I didn't want to give him money (because I don't know his situation, and I do not want to enable addictions) I started to head towards the Interstate when this voice literally said "you could feed him!" I went to McDonalds and got him a couple Quarter pounders and a lg water. I went back and parked where I would be able to say helw in private and give him the food. I got his attention and asked if I could offer him some warm food and water. He looked into my eyes.... and said, of course.. Thank You. He had very kind eyes. He did smell of alcohol, but hey, I don't know his life. And even more so, I don't have to walk in his shoes... My shoes have sand in them from the Beach I live on. So... God is opening my eyes to the needs of others, I have always thought of myself as a spiritual person, but I believe that I have a lot of work to do on myself. This book has opened my eyes to Gods vision of how we "can" be. It is one of the best books that I have ever read. I have re-read parts of it several times, and I just got it a week ago!!!
