Good Book for the Beginner and to Use for Reference
This book shows you how to start a new hobby of crochet. The first chapters go into detail about hooks and different types of yarn. It tells the beginner what yarn to use with the hooks that are available. The pictures really help with all the explanations all through the book. Methods on holding the hook and advancing yarn are discussed and then each type of stitch is explained from the simple chain to the more complex treble crochet. Instructions for increasing and decreasing each type of stitch are included and explained. The book goes on to creating circles, rings, spirals, how to join rounds and how to join yarn to make the neatest juncture. All of the different abbreviations used in crochet are listed and the book explains how to block and press a project, how to assemble the projects and includes several different seam methods. Advance projects, like Granny Squares, Bruges crochet and Crocodile stitch are explained as well as all things that can be made by crochet. The book ends by giving great suggestions on how to go into business selling what you make.It is a great book for the beginner and a good reference book for someone that does know how to crochet, just in case they forget how to make a stitch. Hook and yarn sizes and other measurements are in both American and European measurements so this book can be used by anyone anywhere. There are also suggestions on videos and web sites where you can get lovely patterns and other information.

bye-bye old fashioned doilies
My first crocheting projects were making clothes for my Barbie doll, about 40 years ago. Crocheting like knitting is a wonderful hobby for cool winter nights. The touching of soft yarn while creating something beautiful relaxes the mind. Recently having moved into a cooler area I thought I might check out a book, which shows me the latest techniques and styles. I am not into buying stuff from China, I prefer interesting, beautiful and unique pieces.I could not have made a better choice than getting "How to crochet Vol 1" by Beatrice Crimbleton. Here is what makes this book exceptional: Once and for all it wipes out any association of crocheting and old fashioned doilies. This book is modern and beautiful. I loved how the author states: "If you are here to learn how to crochet, you must also learn to treat yourself as a real artist..." That is indeed what it is. Crocheting is one of the simplest ways to create artsy clothing, tailored to one's personal liking, no piece alike. This book takes crocheting into the 21 century. Beautiful illustrations of individual pieces make the reader want to start crocheting this minute. I loved the precious and creative gloves (location 16 and 24) and the various scarves. Actually, these are exactly the kind of pieces I want to crochet. The author does a fine job in presenting technical details about the different needles and yarns, as well as pictures, which show the beginner how to do the various loops and stitches. Even though I have crochet for a long time, I found stitches I had never seen, like the Crocodile Stitch. I think that is the first one I am going to try out..This book would be a wonderful gift for a daughter, who wants to create unique, individualized, fashionable clothing - 5 starsGisela Hausmann, author & blogger

Needs Improvement before charging for it
I pick up a lot of books on crocheting and other arts and crafts. Mostly I am looking for my next project. Even instructional books, like this one, have some cool patterns I might not have seen elsewhere. But, alas! This book doesn't do it for me.Yes, the instructions are written fairly well. I mean the language is easy to understand. But the font is greyed out in a lot of places where I couldn't read it without getting a headache. Thank goodness, and a few aunts, I know how to crochet already and I didn't have to start with this book. And though this is illustrated, there just are not enough, nor accurate pictures to help a novice. And I found no new ideas for my own collection of patterns. Sigh!

Great book
Before you write this off as another hobby you don't have time to do, read this book. It won't take you long and it will convince you otherwise! I wanted to read it because there are countless blogs and sites about crochet. Some of my friends are making money from it. This book is great because it introduces the tools you'll need (while explaining materials, textures, measurements, and other artsy things), knots, and techniques. There's a crazy amount of detail and direction in this book. The pictures and diagrams were really helpful. I can't think of a better way to learn--a friend tried to teach me but this book was better! I can't imagine, but I look forward to other volumes Crimbleton has in store.
