The Meanings of Grammar
This is a very useful book indeed. It builds on its sister volume (Rediscover Grammar) by providing an explanation of style and usage for grammatical items. The two books are complimentary. 'Rediscover Grammar' provides the basic explanation, whereas 'Making Sense of Grammar' shows how grammar relates to semantics and pragmatics. I haven't encountered any other book that does this, let alone so well. David Crystal believes that this approach (linking grammar with semantics and pragmatics) is the future. I completely agree.

Good book let down by the basics
As a serious university English language student I bought this book having been told Crystal was "the man" and full of hope that he would reveal all. What a let-down. Not in terms of content I hasten to add but in the simple matter of the index, which is appalling. Look up hyponym or meronym or even homograph! You wont find them. When studying you need to find things quickly so you'd go to the index, right! Wrong!Such a let down and sadly repeated in "rediscover grammar" another Crystal title. I'm sure this stuff is in here.....somewhere. Not impressive in my view. This knowledge now means I avoid Mr C like the plague.

Very good
This is a very good book to assist in understanding the basics of language and the rules which govern the English language. It is set out clearly and the structure is easy to follow. Examples are always given in green text, which is surprisingly useful. Plus, it's nice and small so is not oo heavy to carry around.
