Longbourn: The unputdownable Richard and Judy pick : Jo Baker: desertcart.in: Books Review: If you loved P&P, must read - Beautifully written. Also makes you think about P&P characters again, in a more critical way, which is good. Review: Vivid English countryside - Longbourn made me want to reread Pride and Prejudice. (Although, I didn't because I'm lazy. But, that's another matter.) It was one of the slowest page turners I ever read, but a page turner nonetheless. The book provides a very vivid description of the English countryside, with strangely endearing characters and a twist with Mr Bennett that you wouldn't believe. Oh, and let's not forget the delicious food. This is not just a book for Jane Austen fans, but any fan of good writing.

Pathetic quality of the book
I did not order a used book - yet what I have got is either second hand or one of those pirated books off the street

Lovely book
It's set at the same time that Pride b Prejudice was happening.. it's the servants story.. it's a little late in the sense that Downton Abbey has already cornered and excelled at that space.. and was nice to read backstories of the main characters from a different pov.

A fantastic, gripping story. The writing is tight and the characters deep and real. The back story of a servant's life at that time is fascinating and horrifying. I was tense and nervous throughout and despite the obvious parallel with P&P I still wasn't sure if or how it would all work out! And the suspense at the beginning was gripping. It did get a bit bogged down in the middle - the wrting was still awesome and the story interesting, but I was so anxious to return to the real story I wanted this part to be shorter. There was a lot of mystery throughout so it was a bit like a detective novel too whuch was great. The bits involving the beloveds from P&P were respectful and rang true so that was pleasing. Best book Ive read in years.

This book is a great and fun read for fans of Jane Austin and the world of P&P. It started off a bit slow, but about one third of the way through the book it got really interesting. Jo Baker tells a very inventive story in an entertaining way. I certainly learned a few things about everyday life in the regency era!
