Down The Road Wherever Deluxe

Those who have followed Mark Knopfler's solo career lately will know that he has been branching out stylistically, and the results are scattered across the massive Privateering and its follow-up, Tracker. I enjoyed both of those albums, but some moments felt like filler or outright retreads of previous songs. With Down the Road Wherever, Knopfler has brought all of his new elements together into a fresh and thrilling package that long-time fans and newcomers alike will be able to enjoy.16 songs, 78.5 minutes, and not a second of it feels like wasted time, filler, or a retread from a previous album (I'm looking at you, all three or more variations on "You Can't Beat the House"). This album is, without a doubt, one of my all-time favorites from any artist. Folk, funk, rock, jazz, all rolled into that distinct Knopfler style that fans have come to love.Long-time fans couldn't possibly ask for more, and anyone who likes music at all will find plenty of bang for their buck here.

Wow! What a musician! I had somehow missed the Dire Straits to Mark Knopfler transition but in my defense it was during the child rearing, husband balancing, job working few decades. I have my work cut out for me as I see he has been very busy. There is an interestingly diverse set of songs which I wasn’t sure I liked together but now love the flow! A couple of songs are down right sexy, some are light and airy, some are historical but they all deal with the human condition. And then of course there are those fingers on the strings! I love the album and will be getting some of his earlier ones.

As I have aged and come to really love jazz and Mark Knopfler in parallel this Mark Knopfler album with jazz leaning tracks is to me a wonderous thing indeed! Everything you love about this master musician is here and then there is more. Fill your room with this album and take pleasure in the knowledge that beautiful music is still being made.

A batch of surprises from the best. This was the first time in ages I found myself saying, "What is this?"Love it all as I do all of Mark's music. His soul resonates in every note....

If you're looking for a Dire Straits album, this isn't it. On the other hand, if you're looking for impeccably produced music with the typical Knopfler flair for commenting on every day life and the every day man, this is it. Mark Knopfler is always innovating and branching out in music. There is a wonderful mix of styles here. One of his best albums.

I own every one of his albums and it's the first that I had genuine difficulty getting through. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone other than a stalwart fan who has no difficulty sacrificing objectivity for the sake of blind loyalty. Another example of change for the sake of change rather than substance. I will most definitely sample the tracks before buying any future albums of his. I gave it one star more than the horns and food lyrics deserve.

Well crafted, and played, MK is still a master at his craft. Great ensemble of musicians and vocalists... Listen to all the subtilties within !

I think this album is perfect. I'm listening to it now - for about the 100th time. I first bought the standard, and then the deluxe version. Definitively go for the deluxe version. The recording quality is fabulous, every song is equally great in its own way, and in my humble opinion you'll find Mark Knopfler at the top of his game - so far! And it's one of those albums that just keeps getting better and better...

Think you know what Mark Knopfler sounds like right? Think again. Have you ever bought a record and been so excited to get home to play it to find yourself saying 'You're kidding? What's this?' Have all th Knopler solo albums? All the Dire Straits albums? Don't touch this one. Think of all the album tracks on any cd that you skip and play the hits, that's right, a whole 16 tracks of them. Can I remember a tune? No. This is so bad I dont want to. Darling Pretty, Are We In Trouble Now, The Long Road, Going Home, Wherever I go? Nothing like that on here. Long haunting guitar solos? No. You will be praying, if like me you have tour tickets, that he's not going to build the set around this lot. You have been warned. Dont buy it.

Heute ist es erschienen, das neue Album von Mark Knopfler. Ich bin zwar noch nicht lange zu Hause, aber natürlich kam ich nicht umhin, es zumindest schon einmal zu hören. Und, was soll ich sagen? Einfach geil!Eigentlich hat Mark Knopfler auch mit diesem Album nichts wirklich Neues erfunden. Muss er aber auch nicht. Er bewegt sich in bekanntem Terrain derart gekonnt und individuell, dass jedes Stück sich sofort festsetzt wie ein alter Bekannter und gleichzeitig neu klingt und mit Überraschungen aufwartet. So wie Knopfler können das nicht viele.Stilistisch bietet das Album eine große Vielfalt. Vom klassischen Dire Straits-Sound über Blues, Folk, Americana, Bar-Jazz, Soul bis hin zu karibischen Rhythmen ist alles enthalten.Inhaltlich tätigt Knopfler einen Rückblick auf (musikalische) Erlebnisse und Beobachtungen. Der umfasst den Beginn mit den Dire Straits ebenso wie Coverbands und das Verhalten gleichaltriger Kollegen. Man merkt der Verarbeitung in der Musik die Reife an, die Knopfler in seiner über 40-jährigen Karriere gewonnen hat. Und die Tatsache, dass er zu sich gefunden hat und anscheinend durch nichts aus der Ruhe zu bringen ist. Irgendwie ist es bezeichnend für ihn, dass er anlässlich der Aufnahme in die Hall of Fame nicht zu den Feierlichkeiten gegangen ist, weil er sonst eine Rede hätte halten müssen und mit Leuten eine Session spielen sollte, die er entweder nicht kannte oder schätzte.Sein neues Album gehört für mich jetzt schon zu seinen besten. Wer ihn schon mal live gesehen hat weiß, dass aus einem 5-Minüter gerne auch ein 10-Minüter wird, der vor genialen Soli und Improvisationen nur so strotzt. Ich freue mich schon sehr auf das Konzert am 1.7. in Oberhausen.

... aufgereiht, wie auf einer Perlenschnur.Und eine Songperle funkelt schöner als die andere, auf der mir vorliegenden Deluxe-Edition des neuen Knopfler-Albums 'Down the road wherever'. Eine unglaubliche musikalische Vielfalt bietet uns da Mark Knopfler auf seinem für mich besten Solo-Album seit langer Zeit.Ohne jetzt auf die einzelnen Titel alle näher einzugehen, das ist Geschmacksache wem da was besonders gefällt oder vielleicht auch mal nicht so, aber schon mit dem Auftakt 'Trapper Man' steigt Knopfler flott und abwechslungsreich ein. Dann 'Just a boy away from home' mit dem sensationell gut eingebauten Gitarrensolo 'You'll never walk alone'. Dazwischen mal ein herrlich grovender Titel wie My bacon roll und viele weitere starke Songs mit vielseitiger Instrumentierung und vor allem mächtig viel Gitarre. Dazu starke Begleitmusiker, mit denen er teilweise schon lange, lange zusammenarbeitet, die sich mit ihren Instrumenten gekonnt einbringen und einen wunderbaren Sound-Teppich legen. Knopfler-Herz was willst Du mehr.16 Songperlen, verbunden durch eine wunderbare Perlenschnur. Und diese verbindende Perlenschnur ist Mark Knopflers einmalige und markante Stimme und seine wundervollen Gitarren.Fazit: von mir 5 Sterne und eine Kaufempfehlung (außer für diejenigen, die immer noch hoffen, daß Knopfler wieder mehrere Rollen rückwärts macht und die Dire Straits auferstehen lässt).Und dazu noch ein Wunsch: möge Mark Knopfler noch lange fit und gesund bleiben!

Manche Mark Knopfler-Fans sind schon seltsam. Kaum ist ein neues Album erschienen, geht das Gemeckere los. So auch jetzt wieder: langweilig sei es, immer das Gleiche, keine Gitarrensoli mehr, einer sagt gar, er habe eine Playlist mit über 90 Titeln von MK, aber vom neuen Album komme da nichts drauf, das Ganze stecke nur in Pappe, deshalb zwei Sterne Abzug, man rieche (!)den Alkohol etc. Statt also das neue Album in Ruhe ein paar Mal zu hören, werden derart unangemessene Rezensionen spontan eingestellt.Ich finde, das neue Album hat eine stilistische Breite wie kein anderes MK-Album zuvor. Jeder Song klingt anders als der vorhergehende, und sogar jazzige oder funkige Bläserarrangements, sonst noch niemals von MK verwendet, sind vertreten. Dazu so viele Gitarrensoli wie seit Dire Straits nicht mehr, oft in langen, ausrollenden instrumentalen Schlusspassagen. Alles ist auf Abwechslung angelegt, freilich immer in Marks entspanntem eigenem musikalischen Idiom. Und natürlich nach wie vor eine Fülle herrlicher Melodien. Die Stimme ist so gut wie seit jeher, und die Aufnahme klingt phantastisch. Die Länge der de Luxe-Edition beläuft sich übrigens auf knapp 79 Minuten.Eine Menge Gründe, sich zu beklagen, was?!Oder einfach die wunderbare neue Platte als ein weiteres Geschenk dieses Ausnahme-Musikers an uns zu genießen.

I've listened to this twice now, and nothing really pulls me into it. This is an extraordinary musician who has produced an ordinary, relatively bland and unexciting album. If you're looking for the genius of Ragpicker's Dream, Heart Full Of Holes, or even the quirkiness of Quality Shoe, you won't find it here. Even the final (and shortest) track, which has been cited by media reviews as the best on the album, isn't really all that. And to call this a 'Deluxe Edition', with its cardboard sleeve and nothing special booklet, is a bit of a stretch. OK, so it does have two bonus tracks that the standard version doesn't have, but they're nothing to write home about either. Overall, a disappointment.
