Antidote for anxiety and depression
I like this book. I like the last words of the author stating that the goal to overcome anxiety and depression is discipleship. As we follow Jesus Christ and daily seek Him in the word of God, we become more and more like Christ. I now call myself and my fellow Christians God's holy people. I recommend this book for some patients who comes to the clinic I worked at.

The molecule on the cover is Sertraline AKA Zoloft
Not knowing the name of the molecule on the front was driving me crazy. I think it is Sertraline which is the generic name for Zoloft.Overall, the book was pretty simple, but I think it was generally Biblical. I think it is a good idea to make sure that the cause of anxiety and depression is not due to sin or wrongly placed confidence - which is also sin. I would probably recommend just using this as a primer and not as the only resource that you use.

An Unexpected Blessing
This book was unexpected, and exactly what I needed. The whole book feels engineered for people struggling with anxiety and/or depression: the color scheme, the chapter length, the text layout, even the font size. Every sentence is meaningful without being overwhelming. This book is a journey, beginning with "you're not alone", continuing alongside familiar biblical people and the author himself; being simultaneously encouraged and challenged at what, for me, was just the right pace. Are there minor things I disagree with in this book? A few. But it's refreshing to have commentary and strategies presented by an intelligent and faith-filled Christian person who has actually experienced the anxiety and depression they're talking about.

An amazing book; must read for ANY follower of Jesus who feels anxious
I'm writing this review with the hope that John Mark Comer starts publishing it again. I'd like to buy 10 copies and send them to people wo could use this book. It was profound, and I'm grateful to John Mark for writing it.

Challenging and Encouraging
John does a phenomenal job breaking down anxiety and depression and sharing his journey. Probably going to read this book several times. I'm glad there are individuals in the faith that are not afraid to talk about mental health. Great book!

A great book.
As someone who has suffered on and off for the last 10 years with depression, this book is one that teaches us to hope, pray and turn to Jesus. A must read for any Christian suffering with depression.

Hmm...
Many years ago, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones wrote a stellar Christian perspective on "spiritual depression" entitled _Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Its Cure_. In it, he proposed that a lot of the "struggling soul" issues that people face are the result of bad ways of thinking and the outcomes of bad choices people make. The Bible says that as a man thinks in his heart, so he is, and there is a lot of truth to that. Our brains are plastic in that they adapt to the ways we think, and a downward cascade of thinking tends to wire the brain over time into a perpetually depressed condition. The evil that men do sometimes comes back to afflict them. That said, we can't trace everything in every mental health situation solely to what the sufferer has or has not done. Many people have terribleness inflicted on them, and how they cope with tragedy may or may not have anything to do with their mental health. In addition, we are still flesh and blood, and sometimes the body gets out of whack for reasons that don't have a clear cause, and that's just part of living in a fallen world.I write all that introduction to say that John Mark Comer's _My Name Is Hope_: Anxiety, Depression, and Life After Melancholy_ reads like a zealous young man's attempt to heal himself, with God's capable help, of depression and anxiety. This is not to say that God cannot heal people with mental afflictions. I firmly believe He can. And I firmly believe that some of Comer's advice on prayer, diet, exercise, and the like can help people who are in mental anguish. That said, I can't avoid feeling that Comer has a little bit of impatience with people who can't make what worked for him work for themselves. Again, this book reads like advice from a very young man who has not seen more of life. For this, it comes off lacking. We have too many doctors prescribing too many psychoactive drugs for too many people. And yet, some people truly are in need of those medications. It's them I worry about in relation to this book. The Lloyd-Jones _Spiritual Depression_ book takes the perspective of a seasoned pastor. While Comer is a pastor too, I'm not as confident in _My Name Is Hope_ as I am in the elder author's tome. If I had to pick a Christian treatment of this issue, I'd pick the Lloyd-Jones.If you or someone you know are feeling off and not yourself, take advantage of proper self-care techniques and make God a strong part of that care. He truly can heal. But make sure you see a doctor too. And if you've had a past that you've kept buried as a defense, find a way to bring it both before God and before a person or two you trust. Bring ALL the help available to you to bear on the issue. And if that involves meds, don't feel like a lesser for having to have help via pharmacology. Some people will.Bless you.

simple yet profound
I love the simple, conversational tone of the book. It is both simple and profound and very helpful. Highly recommend.

Practical and Biblical
John Mark’s book, My Name is Hope, is one of the most hopeful, helpful, and Biblical looks at seeking to follow Jesus in the midst of depression and anxiety. Thankful for this book.

A good over view of various concepts and biblical connections to the topic
A nice biblical overview but lacked solid narrative - for a topic that is so personal this book lacked that touch, I felt like I know what John Mark thinks about the topic and very little about what his journey, or others truly
