Excellent book for historical costumers
This is a fantastic book. The research is great and the instructions are really good. It would be worth the money just for the buttonhole instructions (for some reason I could never find good instructions for doing a buttonhole by hand) but there's so much more there. It's hard to find a book on historical costume that gives you in depth information on how clothes were originally made and how to do it yourself. This book does just that. I think both experienced and novice sewers alike will get a lot out of this book.

Full of technique useful for more than just men's doublets; a great investment
Truly excellent source for fine tailoring technique that is applicable in spheres outside men's period doublets. Directions are clear. I have experience with aspects of the drafting methods described herein and am confident that they will work nicely and with no more than the usual, small personal adjustments. My SO is looking forward to his gorgeous new doublet for the spring. Thanks so much for this work, Mr. Gnagy.

Period Doublet Made by a Man for a Man!
Historically informative, this book covers the creation of a doublet, all the work done by hand in as period a fashion as possible with notes on how to alter to different but periodly similar styles. I think that perhaps the most delightful part is that the entire project in all of its wonderfully documented detail is done by a man and for a man. The insight of a male perspective on wearing and creating is invaluable and an unexpected bonus. I can't wait to work on some of these projects.

Great color photos
Great color photos, laid out well and easy to follow. Great tool to learn how to make button-holes and buttons! I'm so glad I bought it! If you want to make a costume for late-period SCA or for a more historically accurate costume for Ren-faire, this book is for you. Shows you how to PROPERLY hand sew a garment, not just whip something together but to re-enforce and shape a garment so that it will last for years with proper care.

Gold for Historic and Modern Tailors Alike
This is a must have for anyone doing historic costuming, and those who do modern tailoring will take away a treasure of insights as well. I've been sewing for a year and was able to follow the techniques in this book and come out with great results. Buttonholes! The period tape method of measuring a form and coming up with a custom pattern was spot on with only a few alterations (shoulder slope and sleeve preference). If you want to up your game in tailoring, get this book and study up.

4.5 stars would be more accurate.
This is an outstanding book for it's research and ability to demonstrate a project. However, it's print quality and layout are not quite A-materials. More of a B+.I know how difficult it can be to self publish, but one should be extra aware of how unfairly a self published author must be the height of perfection. The choices of photos too sometimes don't really demonstrate the step he is describing.I was also hoping for more. Bravo To Gnagy. I'm sorry Amazon won't let me give him an extra half star: this is really a 4.5! book. If you care about the clothing of the period, you need this book.
