If you love the movie
This is the "shooting script" of Frank Darabont with a forward from Stephen King of the movie "The Shawshank Redemption". Re-live the making of the movie through the scenes as some were altered due to filming situations in Mansfield and some deleted for time. I felt that many of the decisions actually reveal more examples of Darabont's genius. Read it and see what you think. Did he make the right choices? Or is he indeed a filmaking genius?

This my favorite script ever written
This my favorite script ever written. I first read it back in the mid 90's after the movie came out, but I somehow lost my copy of it over the years. I bought this one to replace it and couldn't be happier. The thing that I love about this copy is Frank's commentary after the script about scenes that we were cut, how scenes came about and the best part him explaining the grueling job called filmmaking. Extremely useful insight. I highly recommend this script to all writers, aspiring or working. In fact this is a must read if you are a writer. Yes, it's that's great!

The Shawshank Redemption
Great to have if you're a fan of this movie! Very interesting to see how the movie evolved from script to screen.

Hard to Believe Stephen King Wrote the Original
You see the name Stephen King and expect it to be horror. Instead, this is about relationships in the worst possible environment. The characters are what characters should be. The bad are bad to the point of unbelievable cruelty. And, it is hard to remember that the good are convicted felons.

Not a Pigeon but a Crow
An interesting peek in how the movie was created from Stephen King's original story and re-made in Darabont's image. The transformation of King's story (about storytelling) into a film script (about prison life and Andy's escape) is fascinating. I suppose we've all seen the movie and remember it with fondness. Of particular interest in the script were the decisions Darabont and his crew made in changing it--sometimes owing to time or weather constraints and sometimes for simple expediency.

Totally worth it
Wonderful book. I just wanted the script but it comes with very interesting comments by Frank Darabont of the process of shooting the film. Once at it, you kind of miss more detail in some aspects and less anecdote, but no complaints! Reading it was a wonderful experience. I'm very happy of my purchase. One of the simplest, best screenplays ever written, and one of the best movies ever made.

Excellent Adaptation
The shooting script deviates slightly from the actual movie, especially in the final scene. They even cut the scene between Red and his parole officer (which shows how difficult it is for Red to adapt to the outside world, after being locked away for 40 years.) Still, the interplay between Red and Andy is magical, and the writer develops great tension as we move towards the end of the final act. I have seen the movie at least 6 times, and each time I find a new message. Darabont's use of voice-overs - throughout the the script - allows him to expand psychological themes. You feel yourself entering the mind of the convict, as Red (Freeman) speaks about his beliefs, and talks about the community within the prison. Yes, it is a bit long, but I wouldn't change a single scene. I love this script. Read it. Enjoy it.
