Hi - the train will go in either direction when it reaches a Y-shaped intersection.

Is there a special trick to get it to work?

There is no special trick. It can be controlled by pressing forward, backward, and stop buttons on the train. However, it can also be controlled by the remote controller provided that the channels are matched.

Does this train fit or run on a fisher price geotrax rail set?

We used it on Ikea Wooden rails. I have no idea about geotrax rail set. If you compare them in an Ikea shop, it may help.
