“Strata Smith” what a remarkable man. His ancient work still stands the test of time.
“Strata Smith” what a man, this book is an absolute delight for any one who loves this country and rejoices in the incredible diversity of our geology. I am not a geologist but have always been fascinated by the sheer industry of this man and the way he painted a geological picture of the country all those years ago and still stands the test of time. If you doubt that this country is a special place just read this book and you will realise that this is truly God’s own country.

Wonderful
Superbly presented. A vibrant and colourful presentation - first read is a page turner just to enjoy the visuals and that alone was satisfying but then into the detail. My only mistake was not putting this on my Christmas list it would have made a fab gift.

Not a Coffee Table book, STRATA wins Alice Award
STRATA is a layered book, interspersing text-led chapters that follow the logic of chronology and of theme to tell the story – in Strata these were the map sections, which were organised by plate. Strata has a third layer – Sowerby’s fossil plates and Smith’s fossils. The publishers combined a good, informative narrative read with a stunning visual presentation without allowing one element to detract from the other. Most coffee table books, although beautiful to look at, have very little text to read or information to impart. Strata does both.It is intended to be read for its interesting and authoritative chapters on a little-known historical figure, William Smith, whose work the text illuminates, and it is intended to stun readers with the presentation of the beautiful facsimile map pages and other original sketches and cross sections. The Alice Award - Each year, a jury of publishing and art world professionals bestows the $25,000 prize on a book that represents excellence in all aspects of the work; idea, text, illustration, design and quality of production. STRATA is a richly illustrated book that makes a valuable contribution to its field and demonstrates high standards of production.

Simply Breathtaking. An essential addition to any library of scientific literature.
As a retired geologist I have found that one of the benefits of retirement is that you have time to review your profession and work. After years of looking at the "trees" it is good to go to the mountain and contemplate the forest. As an undergraduate, I was introduced to William Smith as the founder of modern stratigraphy. Later upon reading Smith's biography, "The Map That Changed the World" by Simon Winchester, 2001, I became acquainted with Smith, the man. Even then, before I acquired this magnificent collection of Smith's work, I truly had no idea the scope and genius of his assembled works now published here in one volume. "Strata" is simply breathtaking. The quality of printing makes this not only a fine coffee table work but a serious addition to any science library. A large book, the plate reproduction is some of the finest I have seen. Anyone would be proud to own this book. I regard it as an essential addition to any science library.

What a Beautiful Book
If you are interested in Geology and maps this is the book for you. It is beautifully illustrated and the maps are magnificent. It contains quadrants of the original Map Strata as well as pictures of the Fossils that were in each quadrant. It is a large Coffee table size but for more than just a coffee table book. I'm looking forward to reading it in depth.

Unique
This is a remarkable book. I was born and raised in England so this book was especially important for me because I was able to identify places I knew well.
