The Imperfect Board Member: Discovering the Seven Disciplines of Governance Excellence

Perfect for Non-Profits
For those who can grasp concepts in a story format. The advantage is in demonstrating some basic principles within the ebb-and-flow of interpersonal relationships. Therein lies the real strength of this wonderful book. It is not enough merely to know principles and facts. Anyone functioning at the level of a board chair and CEO can attest to that fact. Often, the key is know ing"how", 'when" and "with what kind of attitude and heart." Jim Brown begins to get at these issues. I would definitely recommend this book to all who work on non-profit boards!

Easy to read concepts
This book is written as a story which makes it interesting and seems very true to life. The Journey you are taken on teaches as it tells and by the end you have a good overview of what good Governance could look like. Perfect for a business embarking on this big step for the first time"

The Imperfect Board Member
This book was an interesting way of educating the reader on how a good board should function. Since most board members are also consumers of the product and or service provided by the company of which we are board members, we all wear mulitple hats and have our own personal opinions on how the company should operate. This book shows how to rise above those opinions and look at the higher level vision of the company and not the day-to-day operations. I am also reading John Carver's 'Boards That Make a Difference' and firmly believe that the Board must stay out of the operations unless the CEO is extremely weak. These two books together give great ideas of how a good board should operate and how individuals within those boards should consider more than just their one view-point.

Childish and sloppy
I was looking for books to improve my knowledge around board governance. But I found the fictional characters and narrative in this book to be childish and sloppy. Key points were lost in conversational narrative and I ended up throwing this book in the bin after 5 chapters.

Moving Board Members From Meddling to Monitoring
Jim Brown nails it. With big print, mind-grabbing graphics and a story line in the tradition of Ken Blanchard and Patrick Lencioni books, you'll value the author's seven disciplines in this leadership fable about business boards, nonprofit boards and faith-based boards.Example: "The best boards keep their noses in the business and their fingers out!" Brown warns, "The only way a board can responsibly do its job without meddling is by monitoring very well." Buy a bunch and give a copy to each board member and senior executive on your team.

Accessible concepts, quick read
Most books on governance are dense and technical. Brown's approach is perfect for readers who are interested in gaining a general understanding of their role and responsibilities. I would recommend this book as part of new board member orientation and for those who want a refresher course on governance. A Compelling Read for Board Members
This us a light but important read for any Board member whether a novice or a veteran. It serves to remind Board members of their role and responsibility to the organization they have been selected to guide. The advice and perspectives offered suit public firms as well as the not for profit and volunteer sector. It is great reading for "Board Orientation" sessions.
