Dlink-505 review with a bit of testing
Very Fast delivery form amazon. Straight out of the box I connected to a socket. First tried in repeater mode. Didn't work.Tried the default password on the card several times, but no response. Switched it to wi-fi Hotspot mode. No problem setting up, and works nicely. But I went back to the repeater mode because that was my original aim to use it for. Still no response. Originally the 505 comes with 1.03 firmware. I found the 1.05 on their website and upgraded it. After this upgrade the repeater mode started working. In the end happy ending.I did a bit of testing with my laptop.UPC has a 30Mbit connection in our house. Connecting to the UPC modem/router with wifi I had 16-18Mbit/s 4bar on the wifi and excellent signal. About 12m from the router and 3 walls.Connecting to the Dlink-505 in repeater mode 7Mbit/s and 5 bar excellent signal. I was sitting from the 505 2m away no walls. This is not so impressive. But when went out the garden adding an extra wall to the signals. The UPC modem/router speed dropped to 3-5Mbit/s and 2 bars with bad signal strenght.Connecting to the Dlink 505 the speed remained 7mbit/s and 4 bars with excellent signal strenght. All in all it is useful as a travel router/hotspot/repeater because its easy to setup and use, but as a permanent gizmo in the house maybe a stronger router/repeater is required considering the 7Mbit/s I got out of it just enough nowadays. On the go it should be enough. They should really ship it with the newer firmware, especially that the repeater mode does not work with the 1.03 firmware.

Great little hotspot
I have a flat in UK that we use less then one month a year so keeping broadband installed is a waste of money. We have 5 in the family so we signed up for BT Wifi for a month and then used this as a hotspot in the flat . All the tablets, laptops, wdtv and smartphones log onto this and then they share the BT Wifi account and a treated as one unit.. The only drawback is the unit had to be hard reset about once a week but takes less then 30 seconds to setup the hotspot again.. Could not be happier with the purchase and highly recommend it.

... have a static IP but works and is a useful way to extend your wifi
Very slow to connect unless you have a static IP but works and is a useful way to extend your wifi range

Amazing, solved all my problems! WRONG!
Smartly packaged, arrived well in time as I used Amazon Prime.. The item itself comes in a well designed and packed box, it was so easy to use and install, I didn't even get the open up the manual. Just needed the initial settings, i.e IP Address etc, and up popped the browser. Just remember the following:1. Don't bother trying to configure this via your Ipad, I just used my laptop and it then worked fine.2. Make sure you have already slid the switch which sits on top of the unit to what you need, i.e. Router, AP etc.The only downside to this is that it worked so well, plugged it in, in two minutes it boosted my WiFi, I could use all my printers and get excellent speeds on my WiFi, I have now forgotten about it. I almost feel redundant!Great piece of kit! Would recommend to anyone and even to a novice, it's straight forward to use!If only everything in life could be so well designed, does what it says on the tin and so easy to use! 5 stars all the way D-Link!UPDATE:Sorry my review cannot go in to too much detail! I can't get enough net connection to write a long one before being cut off, this is how bad this is! Reverting back to Netgear or something else! It worked for about 4 days since then it keeps dropping the signal, if I try and steam a movie (Netflix) it can't handle it, terrible purchase! Shame as Dlink are usually a very good company! (BRAND)

small, easy, works.
It's quite compact, has a very well designed web-based configuration menu and it just does the job!Unfortunately the USB port can't be used to route the Internet service with a 3G/4G USB modem....Who knows, maybe with a firmware update!

Great little device!
So far so good... and I'm still working out all of the different ways that this little device is going to be useful. One point of caution - the hardware version that I received is A1 - whereas the one I had been expecting is the A2.http://www.dlinkla.com/sites/default/files/archivos/DIR-505/DIR-505_A2_Datasheet_01(HQ).pdfThis was a little annoying as I had primarily bought it for travelling to the USA and the A1 has a UK plug built-in whereas the A2 comes with the various slide on/off adapters.Rob

***WARNING*** Not the US version as pictured
It's not often I have cause to complain when an item turns up with a UK plug fitted, but in this case I was looking for a travel adapter for an up-coming holiday. (I already have wifi / internet access in the UK via my mobile phone)I believe there is a version with swappable plugs, however this isn't it and the photos are a bit misleading.Looks like a nice bit of kit, but I'll be returning this one to amazon.
