Buy with confidence, a perfect replacement gear box for the Nelson Traveling Sprinkler.
This is an original replacement gear box for the Nelson Traveling Sprinkler and it's a perfect fit. I had a mix up on some parts ordered but the seller contacted me right back and reshipped the very next day so you can buy through this seller with confidence and know they will go out of their way to make things right. Many thanks to a great seller. 5 stars from this buyer for sure !

Extend the life of your lawn watering tractor.
I have my father's very old Nelson Rain Train lawn watering tractor. This was the correct item to replace the worn out original mechanism. The old wheel caps can be difficult to remove from the old assembly. There may be cutting involved. And of you damage the new ones when re-assembling (usually because you weren't careful - use an appropriate size deep socket to keep it straight), most good hardware stores have caps in the size you'll need.

Works
No problems swapping out the old for the new. If this company made metal gears instead of plastic there would be no real need to replace the entire mechanism, but I am guessing there could be corrosion issues over the same period of time and most people are not going to grease and take care of a lawn sprinkler like it would need. One thing I had to modify was the shut off valve button on the bottom. Went outside after a couple of hours expecting to see the tractor 50 feet ahead of where it was. The lawn managed to close the valve with a high spot of grass or something. So, I took a few big zip ties and attached them like a collar and now it can't close.

Direct Replacement
Great product, fits and functions just like the original. It is a little difficult to remove the old wheels, which is no fault of this manufacture. I had one axle retaining clip that didn’t want to come off and was going to damage the wheel. I drilled a hole through the cap so that I could get a flat punch directly against the axle and then supported the wheel and drove the axle through it. Worked great!! I water a third of an acre and these last about eight years. Will buy again!

great replacement for my Nelson tractor sprinkler
My drive motor failed on my tractor sprinkler and the cost for a full replacement was too high, so I decided to try this, and it went together like a breeze with the exception of the caps that lock the wheels to the axle, they broke in half when I tried to put them on. had to go to my local hardware store for new ones. other than that, all's good and I'm water again., and I think this new motor travels faster than the old one.

Worked Great!
The hardest part was the wheel caps which we cut off with a Dremel tool. Then we pounded them back on using a socket that fit over the new cap. Other than that, it was pretty easy and you keep your old tractor and save some money.

Not the best
First of all I love my tractor sprinkler and I was sad when it stopped moving. I’ve had this thing for 30 years. I took it apart and found stripped gears inside. But they have a replacement transmission.. I thought all right… cool. It came I had a little trouble with the caps for the tires. But it’s all good.I put it out right away because we’ve had no rain in weeks and the grass was brown. After I put it out I checked on it’s progress and it was off. I found the button on the bottom was pushed in. Pulled it out and it worked fine for a few minutes and turned off again.Further investigation revealed it was the hose pushing the button in. This is the same hose I use with the tractor for years. I compared the button on the old trans and the new one sticks out another 1/4 in. My temp fix is I put some zip ties around is so it wouldn’t push in. Works kindaThe other issue is it leaks around the spiny top part. Not sure why. But it works … kinda.
