Is this dry bag waterproof?

Yes when sealed correctly it is (roll-up the top 3-4 times with the buckles tightened). We used them on a river kayaking trip. During that time, they were stuffed in the back compartment, and everything inside stayed nice and dry. They also sat outside of the tent overnight and one night it rained. In the morning all contents were dry. I believe that if submerged for a short period of time they would be fine. For general outdoor use (canoeing, kayaking, boating, camping etc. they’re great bags! I have recommended them to several water sports enthusiasts.

Is there a zipper on the top of the backpack?

No, there is no zipper on the top. You simply need to roll down the top 3-4 times to make it Sealed and closed. This is the best design to ensure the air is removed from the bag and the contents remain secure and dry.

Starting from the top you would roll down to make multiple folds until you reach the top of whatever items you have in the sack, then simply bring the closures together and snap closed.
