How secure is the bag front closure; is it Velcro?

Very secure. Yes, it is Velcro. It's a piece of Velcro about 1.25x2.25" about mid flap. The front flap stays nice and flat. No buckling or curling. I've never had any problems with the flap popping open accidentally. It is a great bag!

My 10"x 7 3/4" iPad fits in the Donner Bag standing up. It also fits sideways, but is hard to get past the zipper. With the iPad in the bag, there is room for a wallet, makeup kit, address book, and check book. Additionally, the pockets under the flap and at the back of the bag hold keys, a small phone, notepad, a pen, 2 granola bars, an eye glass case and a small fold-up poncho.

Is there enough room for dslr camera and extra lense

I am not familiar with this equipment. I once had a 35 m Canon with 1.5 lens, it would have fit but not extras and wallet etc would have had to reduce

Will a Kindle 8.9 fit in the main compartment with checkbooks or other stuff?

I was curious about this question. So, I got a ruler and the bag to measure. The Kindle will not fit on the two outside compartments but will fit in the main, zippered compartment. This is such a great bag!
