The Red Baron: The Graphic History of Richthofen's Flying Circus and the Air War in WWI (Zenith Graphic Histories)

Fascinating account of the air war of WWI.
This is one of a series of graphic novels dealing with war created by Wayne Vansant. And considering the popularity of the topic and the popularity of graphic novels its sure to be popular. I'd heard of The Red Baron long before picking up this book but it was interesting to read his story in the graphic format. Student readers will be fascinated by the depictions of early air warfare, the techniques and strategies used as well as the personal prowess of Richthofen. I think the one thing that came through loud and clear was how dangerous it was to be a pilot during the war. Vansant does a nice job of covering different aspects of the air war including the flying, scouting, fighting, guarding, and other activities of the different units, but also how the units operated. Other famous flying aces of the war from the various participating nations are also included in the story. This is a great way to introduce young readers to the importance of and impact of the past.

No Sign of SNOOPY in this Telling !
If you haven't read any of these great books by Wayne Vansant, you are denying yourself a very pleasant historical read. The author/illustrator is a wonderful historian as well as artist, and a very capeable editor in choosing and telling the facts of actual historical events. This edition follows works on the Civil War, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and others. And I hope many more will follow. The story is of Manfred Von Richtofen, the World War One German fighter pilot who ran up a talley of eighty aircraft shot down and earned the nickname The Red Baron from admiring people and adversaries alike. His career ended at age twenty five when he was shot down and killed in action. Vansant tells the story well, with no embellishment or detractions to the character or historical events. This is not a comic book. The story is aimed at those who can appreciate the fury and irony of war, and the courage of people in combat, no matter their nationality. I look forward eagerly to more works from this talented historian! Amazon provided my copy quickly and in perfect condition. Don't hesitate to order this volume.

Thoroughly enjoyed
I thorough enjoyed this graphic novel. It is informative, well written, and has decent artwork. I have to admire the author for the dedication and willingness to expend the effort to produce a publication of this quality. I highly recommend the book to any person who has an interest in World War One aviation.

Really good, got it for my son to read and I did too. As a fan of WW1 aviation I was impressed with the historical accuracy and high quality drawings. Only negative is the broad sweep of the story is tough to capture in a short graphic format.

excellent
This book will make you smarter. It's not just for little kids. While focusing on the development of military aviation in WWI, this book takes a look at the entire war effort and includes valuable biographical information. Visual indentifiers of planes at the back.Extremely well done. Recommended.

An Authoritative Study
What a great visual study of the Red Baron. This is great history book for those who may not want to read a biography. This will only wet your appetite for more. Even Snoopy would be proud to read about such a noble and innovative ace.

Easy Access To An Aviation Icon
Well done, enagaging and probably more suited to younger readers or those who don't want to wade through any of the many, thick books about him.

Presque parfait !
